Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Bali is changing and thankfully so are the waste management systems. There are many people working in Bali to reduce the rubbish which will otherwise end up in the rivers and ocean. We care about the environment and so do the following:

• Provide free filtered water in every bathroom. Feel free to refill your reusable water bottle.

• Linen and towels are changed twice a week, (unless requested otherwise).

• Our laundry uses biodegradable detergents and everything is dried in the sun whenever possible.

• Use refillable soap dispensers for shampoo, conditioner, body wash, hand soap and dishwashing detergent.

• We are committed to educating our staff and continue to find new ways to reduce, reuse and recycle to the benefit of our guests and Bali.

• And here is one you might chuckle about; encourage Balinese offerings to include organic items only so discourage food wrapped in plastic. The gods don’t like plastic either.

Restaurants and Activities

Head off in any direction and you will find a wide range of restaurants. We keep an updated list of recommended places, and appreciate your input. Check out Grahame’s recommended 5 Breakfasts, 5 Lunches & 5 Dinners. We love passing on recommendations to other guests as there is no way we have time to try everything ourselves so please share these on our facebook page.

Reviews

If you enjoyed your stay, we hope you will tell your friends. If you have a problem, please tell us. Reviews do make a difference and should you take the time to write a review we thank you. We are a small family business and are always looking for ways to improve so welcome your feedback. If you have any suggestions or comments about your holiday at Bali Akasa Villa we would love to hear from you. Email holiday@tropical-infusions.com

Safety Box

Every bedroom has a safe which we recommend guests use. As is the case in most countries, do not leave valuables in open sided rooms or balconies, and remember to lock your rooms. Should you forget your combination, the authorised senior member of staff can open the safe. On arrival the safety box code will be set to 123A. Enter your own code by following these instructions;Open the safe door. Press the red button on the inside of the door facing the hinge. You will hear 3 beeps and the yellow PROCEED light will come on.

  1. Enter a 3 or 4 digit code. To end press “A” or “B”. Eg ‘123A’. Do not use ‘0’ as this will result in an error.
  2. After you have entered the new code the green READY light will come on. You can now close the safe.
  3. Please record your code in a safe place.
  4. If you forget your Code, contact staff who will contact the person with authority to help you open the safe.

Security

Every bedroom has a safety box. CCTV cameras cover the parameters and the entrance of the property.

Spirituality

There are two main temples at Bali Akasa Villa, and it is important for our staff and guests to know that, on the Island of the Gods they are protected and cared for on a spiritual level. Our Balinese staff undertake daily offerings around the villa, and they say that many good spirits like to live on the property, and bring a peaceful energy to the area. Some of the young spirits like to play beside the pool. Guests staying at Bali Akasa Villa will sometimes see the offerings being presented, and if interested, feel free to ask our Balinese staff about them.

Swimming Pool

You may enjoy the swimming pool day or night, but we ask that you keep the noise down after 10pm.

Taxi, Gojek & Grab

Taxis are very affordable. We recommend that you have some small small notes handy, as mysteriously, some taxi drivers do not have any change. Ask for the meter to be turned on or you can negotiate a rate if you are confident about a fair fee. Rp 50,000 which will get you to most locations within Seminyak and Legian. We recommend phoning for a taxi as when you do, the taxi’s number is recorded. You also have the option of installing Grab or Gojek on your phone, which gives you access to delivery services as well as transportation. Prices on these apps also tend to be cheaper than Taxi fairs, however Taxis can be more convenient and more comfortable.

Tips

Tipping is not required or expected though it is appreciated. All tips placed in the Tip box will be gratefully received and equally shared amongst the staff.

Towels & Linen

Towels and linen are changed twice a week or as requested. Bath towels are in the bathrooms, pool towels are beside the swimming pool. If you need more, just ask. Please do not take any bath or pool towels out of the villa. Beach towels are available by request, please sign for them when you take them out of the villa. Lost towels will be added to your bill.

Travel Arrangements and Tours

The staff will be pleased to assist you with information and reservations for tours and activities or with booking restaurants.

TV

There is a smart TV in the living room.

Umbrellas

Umbrellas are available for your use. We ask that you kindly sign out for them. Lost umbrellas will be charged to your bill. If you love our big red umbrellas, you can buy one for Rp 200,000 with the proceeds going to the MyRedEnvelope Foundation.

Wake-up Calls

We recommend simply waking up when you feel like it, but, if you do need to be woken at a specific time, you know who to ask? Our wonderful staff of course. They never sleep.

Yoga

Yes there are some good choices for Yoga in Seminyak.  Yoga 108 on Jl Drupadi No. 108. Walk in price is Rp 100,000 or it’s only Rp 800,000 for 10 classes. The 7:30 class is a more a relaxed stretchy style. The 9:30 class is more intense. All levels welcome.

Where To Eat

There are many great dining options in Seminyak and you will readily find international food such as Italian, Mexican, French, Indian, Japanese and Greek cuisines. Nearby there are Australian and Irish Pubs too. We are choosing to highlight some of the places we love that are within walking distance (15-20 minutes) or a short taxi ride, and which present more regionally based menus with Asian influences. Most of them can be great for either lunch or dinner.

Please check google maps as a reference point for how to get there, but also to check opening hours. If you are not in the mood for walking our staff can help arrange transport or book for you.

Jivva Koffie. I love this place. The setting is relaxed and a little bit old school Indonesian with antique furnishings and things of stone and wood. The menu is varied with some Indonesian dishes you may not find anywhere else in Bali, and their own brand of coffee is great (buy a bag to take home with you). The garden setting is very relaxing and there is a colourful indonesian style cubby house that kids would enjoy.

Ingka. Also nearby is Ingka which is somewhere to go at anytime; breakfast, lunch, dinner, coffee, cocktails, or to do some online work. It’s relaxed and stylish with indoor and outdoor seating options, good service, and a menu you won’t get tired of and which is suitable for all the family, including an additional menu for Japanese food. I recommend their Nasi Campur (pronounced champoor), but I haven’t had a meal there that I did not enjoy.

laPizzetta is owned and run by famed expat Italian chef Sasa and is my favourite local Italian option. Pizza and pasta (with daily specials), and then nip next door to Gusto Gelato for the complete experience. “When in Bali, do as the Romans do”; that’s a saying right?

In this area there are some other places worth considering including Wynna’s Indonesian Delicacy and Tagine for some Moroccan food, both just across the road.

Sugarhead Bakehouse makes lovely pastries, cakes and coffees so if you are needing your sugar fix this is the place for you. Their éclair selection is stunning. They also have some great sourdough breads.

Note; the above places are all on the Bali Akasa Villa side of Sunset Road so are probably easier to get to. The places below are on the other side.

Rocklilly Fusion Eatery; Easily my favourite place for Avocado Eggs on toast which costs around $6.50AUD including a fabulous coffee; A great lunch, or a second breakfast for Hobbits. There is parking at the back if you are on a motorbike. The owner also owns Divine Diva boutique next door, and on the other side there is Niluh Djelantik shoes by Indonesia’s superstar shoe designer turned politician. Yes, I am subtly hinting that you could drop the husband at Rocklilly and then go wild with the credit card.

Warung Taman Bambu This is the place I eat at the most often. It’s local, although you will find plenty of non-locals here. Like many warungs, when you enter, there is a counter with a large range of dishes in serving bowls for you to choose from. You will be asked “Nasi apa?” or “What kind of rice?” and can choose from white, yellow or brown (red). After that, simply point at the dishes that take your fancy, but the small staff can help with a bit of English. Don’t leave without adding some of their Perkedel Jagung (corn cakes). Ask for some sambal. The slightly sweet and not too spicy red one is my favourite; I mean favourite in the whole world, not just on their menu. Your total bill will be somewhere between $2-$5 and it can be your favourite too.

Cendana serves delicious Indonesian food only slightly adjusted for Western palates as well as some western dishes; a great option for families. The rustic restaurant area is very comfortable and perfect for watching the passers by, but you can also go into the garden area and grab a table beside the pool. And if you have your bathers, jump in! My Tip; when ordering I always ask if they have a sambal  they could add to the order. I especially love sambal matah (a fresh mixture of chili, shallots and garlic) or sambal merah (a red spicy and addictive addition to anything apart from desserts).

Chai’ba Seminyak has rapidly emerged as a popular place to open an Indian restaurant and we are loving it. Chai’ba stands above all the other options for us. It has a sophisticated edge to it and the entire operation is very professional and reasonably priced.

Jackson Lily is fantastic. Chef Dean Keddel has created an innovative menu and it is matched by the purpose built restaurant. They have a selection of set menus for two or more which is an excellent way to enjoy the menu’s diversity, and they also have an innovative cocktail menu infused with local flavours. If you are heading down Eat Street (Jl Kayu Ayu) their sister restaurant, Ginger Moon, is also wonderful.

Bloom. Apart from great food, terrific service and an elegant design, the next thing on my cafe wishlist is a garden, and Bloom provides. Right in the arterial centre of Seminyak with Bintang Supermarket as a close neighbour, Bloom is a bit of a sanctuary. It manages to squeeze a lot of variety into its menu which is ideal for a flirty lunch, but would work well for dinner too. The salads are fresh and there is something for everyone on the menu.

Vietnam Bistrot by Mama Hanh. Newly opened and located at the rebuilt Bintang Supermarket, Mama Hanh has created an unexpected addition to the Seminyak food scene. Authentically Vietnamese, and featuring a vegetarian menu on request, her food is fresh and the menu is lively. Best place to combine grocery shopping and lunch, but also perfect for dinner.

La Lucciola I often say that if I was leaving Bali for the last time, this would be where I would gather my friends and family for a last meal and a final sunset. Menu has something for everyone and is reasonably priced. I’d make sure I tell the waiter it’s my birthday because their staff sing the worst ever version of Happy Birthday, and that’s something I would really miss; it is so bad that it is good!

Chandi You may have noticed that I haven’t really profiled Seminyak’s fabled “Eat Street”, but that’s not because I don’t recommend it, it’s because you will no doubt find it for yourself. But I do highly recommend Chandi for its pan-asian menu and comfortable setting. Their sate platters are great for sharing, and they do have a vegetarian option.

What To Do

The obvious answer is nothing but relax and enjoy, but if you are looking for something else, may we suggest…

Villa staff can help you plan your activities, day trips and assist with bookings. We try to recommend activities which we have direct experience of, however, in the end we take no responsibility for the services provided.

For the adventurous spirit try Mason Elephant Park, White Water Rafting, Cycling from Kintamani to Ubud. Package these in with lunch and shopping in Ubud. Or visit Sideman for stunning guided walk.

For families we suggest Waterbom Park, Cycling tours, Bali Bird and Reptile Park, Butterfly (and creepy insect) Park, Learn to Surf, Horse Riding, Kecak Dances and Sunset at the temple at Tanah Lot.

For the more relaxed visitors; yoga classes (Yoga 108, Desa Seni or Prama), learn to cook Indonesian food, massage, pedicure, manicure and another massage, lunch in Canggu, sunrise take a long walk through the village and on to the beach or through the rice fields, shopping and why not another massage, sunset find a beanbag on Seminyak Beach, grab a Bintang, and haggle like crazy with the passing locals with paintings, carvings etc.

If you like coffee we suggest trying Crema Cafe, just around the corner of Jalan Mertanadi. This local guys have a passion for coffee, you won’t be sorry. A personal favourite is Sea Circus near the temple at Petitenget. Great for breakfast and coffee after a brisk beach walk. But there are many good coffee houses around, but we can’t get our heads around Coffee Luwak; the beans have been ingested by small furry creatures as part of the process.

Shopping has endless possibilities in Bali. You can go local at markets such as the Legian Art Market, where you will meet some of most persuasive hawkers anywhere and can get “Special Morning price” at anytime of the day, or you can shop in the more familiar shopping malls such as Mall Bali Galeria, Discovery Mall (opposite Waterbom Park) or Beach Walk (we love their Premium movie theatre with recliners and blankets). In Seminyak itself you will find a vast array of boutiques with original designs, alongside global brand outlets. You can also find tailors to fit you out in your own design, or an “original copy”. You can get antiques made to order. Brilliant. Enjoy the banter as you haggle for the best price.

And finally, don’t be afraid to do nothing at all. Sleep in, laze around the pool, mooch in front of the TV, take that book you brought with you out of the bag and fall asleep on the sun-lounge before you even open it, ignore your emails, daydream, get a  massage delivered to your door, chat to a Balinese about being Balinese.
